With the increase in gas prices many people are switching to motorcycles as an alternative to the automobile, or truck. When deciding to purchase a motorcycle many people neglect to realize that they need a motorcycle license. After they realize this the next step is to take a motorcycle safety course so you can pass the motorcycle examination. Motorcycle tests are quite comprehensive these days. Motorcycle laws change frequently and the tests are updated whenever changes are made to the statutes. It is just like the test to drive a car in that there is a written exam as well as a road test. Motorcycle tests in the USA are fairly uniform in that there is a written and road test, but each state is different on requirements.
In my particular state you first go to the DMV and obtain a learners permit. This enables you to begin learning to ride a motorcycle although there are restrictions with a learners permit.
The road test part of the motorcycle driving test is a standard test and all test centers use the same testing procedures. There are a number of things you need to do in preparation for your motorcycle driving test and a number of legal requirements you must comply with. Usually you can download in pdf the test application and general requirements, or you can go directly to your DMV branch and pick up a copy.
Some general information here is that motorcycle road tests are not given during inclement weather nor when the pavement is damp, due to obvious reasons. In some states the DMV may waive the motorcycle driving part of the test if the applicant takes an approved motorcycle education course. Usually to obtain a Motorcycle License, you must be at least 16 years of age and pass the vision, knowledge (car/truck and motorcycle) tests, and motorcycle driving test. And of course before you actually take the road test you must have passed the written examination.
So, as you can see there is an amount of research involved before you obtain a license. Driving or riding a motorcycle can be dangerous and at the same time be fun. There are actually online courses that are very good in helping you learning how to deal with high risk situations like avoiding danger spots on the roadways, proper starting and stopping procedures, lane changing, aggressive drivers, what to do and what not to do do at an intersection and all the nuances that come with riding a motorcycle.
You should view taking the motorcycle road test as a life saving experience as well as a fun one. Happy Riding!
